How to Clean Car Windows Without Streaks

Nothing is more annoying than sitting in your car after just cleaning it and seeing streaks all over your windows. Most car owners know this frustration well. Not only are dirty windows an irritation, but they can also be dangerous if they impede your vision. Use the tips below to clean your car windows and get rid of those bothersome streaks.

When to Clean

If you are cleaning your entire car, save the windows for last. By doing this, you can avoid getting any wax or soap residue on the windows after you’ve already cleaned them. After cleaning and waxing the car, power wash the windows to get rid of any leftover residue and ensure they’re as clean as possible. You should also try to clean the windows in the shade or on cool days so the sun does not cause the window cleaner to dry too quickly.

Cleaning Cloth

Be sure you are using the right kind of cleaning cloth for the windows as well. Experts recommend using microfiber towels for car windows as they are lint-free and produce a streak-free shine. Be sure to set aside a different microfiber cloth for the windows. Using the same one to clean multiple different parts of the car can actually make the windows dirtiest. You may transfer wax or soap residue from the towel to the window. Be sure to use a clean cloth for the windows.

Cleaning Solution

There are a few different types of cleaning solutions that work well on car windows, so it comes down to a personal choice. You can use a mixture of one part rubbing alcohol, one part distilled water and a capful of white vinegar. Another great option is a solution of 70 percent water, 15 percent rubbing alcohol, and 15 percent window cleaner. Avoid using an ammonia-based cleaning solution as it can damage other areas of your car like the vinyl or leather. Additionally, ensure the windows are totally dry after cleaning them to avoid any streaking. Try not to use too much cleaning solution either. Just mist the windows with the solution.

Using the Right Motion

The motion you use when cleaning is also important. One expert recommends wiping with the microfiber towel in a horizontal motion on the outside of the window and a vertical motion on the inside. This will allow you to see where the streaks are if there are any, and thoroughly clean all of the windows.
